“The courage to take a meager step some days exhausted me. But bravery could bring glory to my Lord. I just had to believe it.” ~OlgaThe Eliot family owns a three-generation run funeral home. The mark of Christ-like love and grace they’ve made on their community is indelible. But, as often in the case of the most compassionate, they are overlooked because of the job they provide. Simply, no one wants to think about death and they make people think about it. Because of this, deep and lasting friendships are rare and dear. This is especially true for Evelyn, one of the granddaughters. She’s felt ostracized because of her family’s profession, and yet, chose to carry it on anyway. It's painfully difficult to face other's loss and pain, to face death, but the call she has to help other's and face her fears wins out. The vivid insights the reader gains through Olga (the grandmother) and Evelyn about the passage of our lives, and that final passage, are both touching and heart-wrenching. When tragedy strikes one of their own, the town reaches out to them and meets their needs, showering them with blessings and sympathy in times of deepest need.
Books don’t usually make me cry—but this one had me sobbing in empathy for the characters not once, but multiple times. The heartfelt reality of these characters struck deep chords—and as their hearts broke and healed, so did mine. Highly recommended!

Well, I just finished Susie Finkbeiner's book My Mother's Chamomile and if you like to read a book that will have you bawling your eyes out (think Steel Magnolias), this book is for you. So well written. The characters are lovely. Wonderful job, Susie.
This book was nothing short of phenomenal! I enjoyed this book so much and was sad to see it end. I loved all the character and felt drawn into their world. I LOVED the Eliot family. Noone ever stops to think how people whom deal with death on a daily basis deal and process these feelings. This book was an inside look into the world of a family (through generations) who run a funeral home, their struggles, their passions, their relationships and most importantly- how the love of Christ shines through each of them.I loved the strong family bond that was evident throughout the book. This book made a lasting impression on my heart. I will now be adding it to my precious "FAVORITES" pile. I will surely be recommending this one. From the heart of a Hospice Nurse thank you Susie for writing this book! ) God Bless you!
My Mothers Chamomile is a gut wrenching novel about a family who deals in death everyday as the owners of a funeral home, they discover however that they will have to get a bit more personal with the concept as a beloved family member is diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. The book goes through each life and the way they are dealing with the news and how each reacts to it.
The thing I love most about the book is the Spiritual side and they way the characters choose to let God and His people minister to them . They are not afraid to share their anger with God , but also are willing to let His mercy flow over them. Such a touching book , I have to say I had to keep my hankie with me from the time I hit the half way point of the book to the end. I shed no small amount of tears over this one.
Great job Suzie Finkbeiner, so happy this book found a home with White Fire Publishing so it could be shared with the world!
I absolutely loved this book! Written from the viewpoints of two of the characters (alternating chapters), I was afraid it would be hard to follow, but it wasn't at all. In fact, I'm happy it was written this way. While reading it, I sometimes felt like the character's best friend, and sometimes I felt like the character herself. I honestly felt like these were real people. The author did a magnificent job molding the characters into real people; it was like listening to a friend. I didn't want the story to end! One word of caution this isn't really a "happy" book and if you are looking for that, you wlll be disappointed. However, this is a "real" book and if you are looking for a book that you can "crawl into" and stay for awhile, one where you can share someone's life, you won't be disappointed with "My Mother's Chamomile." This is definitely going into my "keep" bookcase!
If I was asked to retitle this book (which isn't necessary but let's just pretend), I would call it The Heartbreaking Facts of Life. I ugly-cried all the way through because all of the sorrows -- and joys -- the Eliot-Russell family experienced felt like they were happening. Directly. To. Me. It's been years since I've read a novel in which the characters felt so real, like they were people I know and love dearly. I could picture them all clearly, in crisp detail. (Great description, Susie Finkbeiner!) To say that their pain broke my heart, over and over again, would be an understatement. The last 30 pages destroyed me. Ha! So if you want to read this book, I highly recommend reading it by yourself, or in a room filled with people who've already witnessed your ugly cry. And bring a Kleenex box.
I can truly say that I never read a book that had a mortician as a career for a main character until now. The author does an excellent job in bringing to light some of the things required of such an occupation. She gives the reader lots to think about.
The story is told by alternating characters, Olga and Evelyn, who are grandmother and granddaughter. I enjoyed how these two sandwiched in their perspectives of Gretchen's life, daughter and mother, respectively.
This is a deep read that grips your heart and holds it tighter the further you advance into this novel. The author does an amazing job with showing God's hand in everyone's life without coming across as preachy. (not that it would bother me if she did)
I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys realistic fiction. You will laugh and you will cry and be reminded of God's love.
