Ecstasy Shadowdwellers Jacquelyn Frank 9780821780701 Books
I had put off getting this book based on the negative and neutral reviews but I'm glad that I finally took a chance on it. I really enjoyed it! This book was the 1st Jacquelyn Frank novel that I have read and so I am not familar with her Nightwalker series but I am very much interested in going back and reading more of the novels in this and the other series. This book can be read as a stand alone because there was no confusion about the plot or world portrayed in this novel. My rating system:
5 - Can't put the book down once I start reading, a keeper that I will read time and again
4 - Glad I got it, captured my interest, a keeper that I may read now and again
3 - It's okay, worth the money or time but not likely that I will keep it
2 - Really bad, stupid or not worth the money, time or effort to read
1 - Downright ugly, not a bargain even if it is a free read, and really deserves a 0 or negative rating
I won't recap the story as others have done that already.
WHY I RATED THIS NOVEL A 4 STAR:
Originality and creativity - the world building was absolutely fantastic and unlike anything I have read before
Characterization - I enjoy reading novels where the males are Alpha types with caring but Dominant characteristics - I want my men to be men. I want the females to be strong but fragile. Characters that the reader becomes emotionally tied to and need/want to know what happens to them.
Substance - I don't do light and fluffy. I want something that grabs my interest and does not let go.
Heat factor - yes, I like to have at least a little Heat between the hero and heroine. I also do not mind graphic love making scenes but I do not want it to be every other page where it's overkill.
Smooth reading - no major editing mistakes, does not bog down, no confusion about plot or characters, no passages that have to be reread over and over to figure out what's going on.
HEA - I want and need my HEA
THIS NOVEL CONTAINED ALL THE ABOVE AND MORE!
WHY I DID NOT RATE THIS NOVEL A 5 STAR:
While I really enjoyed this novel, at times I have no problem putting it down and coming back later to it. It did slow down in a few parts but nothing major. I may read it again someday and therefore it is a keeper but it's not one that I would consider a must read again and again.
WARNINGS:
This is not a nice, cute, light or "fluffy" novel. It has violence - not too gory but there are fight scenes. It does take you on an emotional roller coaster ride.
The males are MALES - not your Mr Mom sensitive, in touch with their female side, type.
There are graphic love making scenes - but they are not every other page - nor are they what would be considered porn! (special note: The sisterly kiss of one character to her brother is so far from being erotic that it really made me wonder about one negative reviewer. I could only think in my mind what she would reply if she knew that not only have I kissed my brothers on their cheeks but also have given hugs and told them that I loved them - it would probably shock her too much!)

Ecstasy Shadowdwellers Jacquelyn Frank 9780821780701 Books Reviews
Ashla Townsend has been in a New York devoid of people and light with no idea how she got there or what happened to the sun. She is overjoyed to see another person, but her euphoria turns to abject fear when another man arrives trying to kill the first person. Both men are shocked that Ashla can see them because only Shadowdwellers are able to see one another. Trace kills Baylor, but is mortally injured; Ashla saves his life using her healing hands.
Trace assumes that Ashla must be one of the Lost, a wraith whose body is in a coma in Realscape. As a Shadowdweller Trace cannot cope with any form of light, but to remain only in the shadows typically leads to madness. Trace is further stunned that he has feelings for Ashla as she is the first woman in a dozen years he trusts,. He escorts Ashla to his people, but neither is safe there even though the clan wars ended with the Chancellors solidifying their power; some rebels want the peace broken with Ashla and Trace being perfect targets. She risks her life to heal Trace even while a traitor plots to kill both of them.
With her Demon series over, Jacquelyn Frank begins a new romantic urban fantasy saga that fans of the author will find radically different and refreshing. Readers will love this strong provocative and evocative tale that digs deep into the Shadowdweller society. Trace is honorable and yet caring about his people with an ironic emphasis on punishing rule-breakers. The sub-genre audience will be in ECSTASY with this superb thriller and look forward to more light and dark Shadowdweller entries.

Of all the Jacquelyn Frank Books, this was my favorite. The Shadowdwellers were briefly mentioned in the other nightwalker books but rarely was the race ever given any real detail as to their physical and cultural makeup. The Shadowdwellers are a race of people who do not tolerate light (sunlight, artificial light), therefore they live in darkness and humans are usually oblivious to their existence with the exception of Ashla. The story is an intense relationship between the Shadowdweller Trace, a vizier and most trusted advisor to the twin Chancellors, and Ashla Townsend, who does not know she is a half-breed Shadowdweller. The story is fast paced with very little redundancy. Ecstasy is synonymous with the Shadowdweller. All of the main characters introduced in this book are well developed and has me looking forward to the author developing books around them, particularly the Chancellor Malaya and Guin and the cliffhanger of what Trace's father, Magnus will do to root out the traitor in Sanctuary.
