The Portal and the Panther YA Fantasy Series Guardians of the Portal Book 1 eBook R A Marshall Reviews

Having to wait for the next book ) But I must say, the wait will be worth it. Both this book and book 2 were wonderful. The author succeeded in drawing me in despite my busy and hectic schedule. The characters are very well developed, their problems are real and their victories make you cheer. Thank you, R.A. Marshal for allowing me to escape the realities of my own life to enter the fantasy life in these books
This book starts off with a bang and just keeps going. There is the usual problems faced by teenagers trying to figure out their place in the scheme of things. That's one reason I like YA books. After all that they then face possible world changing challenges and have to fight to protect our world. Just be ready to have book 2 available as the first one ends on a cliffhanger.
Teenagers have a rough way to go nowadays. They struggle with family issues, substance abuse, peer pressure, and any number of very real issues. Drop shifting into a panther in the boys bathroom at school into the mix, and you have a heart-warming, slightly hilarious twist to the mayhem of puberty. Jon is a loveable and loyal main character who struggles to survive high school before this mess. He has few friends and an absentee father. Saving the world on top of it would be more than most teenagers could bear. Like most of us, he fumbles his way through the nuances of his life with heart and charm. I was riveted to my seat through this adventure, waiting to see what would happen next. Small town life never looked so interesting before this.
This is a fresh theme about the challenges faced by young 'shifters' as they grow up and encounter their newly revealed abilities along with more typical teenager trials. Quite creative and an easy read initially. However, the story eventually got clogged up with some of the character's personal issues that they never seemed to realize were really not good! And, the story reached a point when it seemed the author was stretching it simply to get a sequel. The characters never reached their full potential, but remained in a realm of unawareness of self stagnation teenagers learn and grow, and become better people. They may be trapped in unforgiving circumstances, but they are very seldom as obtuse about their personal challenges as in the latter part of this story. It was still a decent read...just didn't continue to develop any depth. The author shows ability and creativity, but perhaps would benefit from following through and completing a good story, before trying to create a sequel.
At first I had a hard time following this. I figure because I'm not a teen. Kept going and really started to enjoy it. Then the end... The author is right I hate cliffhangers in books. It just seems like a trick to make you buy another book to find out what the end of the first book should of been. I read series that I enjoy like Vampires in the Shade, but the author knows how to end the story, but continue on with the series. This one didn't and I'm going to be pissed if book two isn't free or in my Unlimited because I won't spend more money to find out the end of the story of what should of been book one. Four stars for the story. It varied from 3 stars to 4 for the story and down one star for the "cliff hanger" It's not the end of a T.V. Show season it's a book.
I like your writing, I don't necessarily like your characters. In your writing the teenagers are teenagers and act like teenagers most of the time ( I thought the wolf came on too strong for a newbie unless there is an unexplained maturity that comes with being a wolf). I was a little perturbed with your portrayal of the adults, there was too much "we're not going to explain anything you just have to take our word for it", I would have liked more explanation. I like and dislike how you developed Jon's family, again good writing. I knew the book would be a cliff hanger so that was no problem, I have started the second book but will reserve comment until I finish it. So overall, I liked you character development even when I didn't like the characters. I liked your story line but felt a little more background information could have been helpful. Felt Jon was too quick to forget and forgive everyone who didn't count and too unforgiving of the three that did count. I enjoyed the book and hopefully will enjoy book 2 and 3.
I got this book because the description REALLY caught my attention. A teenage boy suddenly shifts into a panther... Interesting beginning, right? That was yesterday morning.

I started The Portal and the Panther as soon as I finished the review of the other book I'd been reading and this book is breathtaking! I grew up in the Missouri Ozarks (just north of the Arkansas Setting) and went to a small high school and I have to say R.A. got the dynamics of a small high school right!

Jon has a lot to learn about shifting and the purpose of shifters in the world. One purpose is to protect the portals and prevent travellers from other worlds from invading our world.

When he shifts the first time, he's at school and knows nothing about what is happening to him.. Fortunately, Layla, who is also a shifter, is nearby to help him. They learn and train and fight with each other... A very interesting book and I'm more than ready to read the second book, which is also available on !
