I liked the book and will surely continue with the series. And yet, I have to admit that it had quite a few limitations...First of all, it relies too much on Star Wars archetypes and narrative tropes. It was the same with the early Fantasy writers, who felt they have to base their work on Lord of the Rings format; otherwise there will not be enough interest.
The book was first published in ’92 and it feels like that. The technology a bit too basic, but it could be easily overlooked, if not for the pace problems. The pace was so out of balance in the first half of the book: it skipped over weeks and months and places, without even flashbacks to cover the gaps. It became more logical at the second half, but at the same time the narrative got too slow and somewhat dragging.
Also the sudden change of POVs drove me crazy and at least 2 of the POVs were unnecessary for the plot and were dropped later. In the end I got used to the switches, but I wish it was formatted better.
The plot was nice as an opening for the series, I’m interested enough to read on. I do hope it gets more original as it goes. I liked the characters, but I wish they were developed better. Again I have much hope for the next book… The romance-lover in me wishes the relationships were places in a bit more spot lights, because the pairings are so cute. Both couples are adorable.

The Price of the Stars Book One of Mageworlds eBook Debra Doyle James D Macdonald Reviews
Space opera is my thing and this book (and series) has a satisfying amount of flitting between worlds and firing missiles, blasters, etc.
I am not a fan of the "sword and sorcery" type of story. With space opera you expect the author to lay down the rules and stick to them. For example, often it's impossible to jump into hyperspace too near a planet or star. If the author sets up such a rule and then breaks it, it's irritating.
In the Mageworlds there are ordinary people and a second set of actors who have jedi-like powers in spades. You never know what they will be able to come up with next -- in other words they are not bounded by rules and to me this is a kind of cheating.
Still, I give this book a 4 because of it's action and fast paced plot.
I found this series through an article about space opera (darn, can't find the link now) and having ordered and read this first volume, decided I had to know how it turned out -- the big story, I mean. This is brilliantly plotted stuff with high-octane action scenes and a whole lot of implied world-building. I still have a fondness for Star Wars Original Flavor movies (the first three released from 1977 forward) with their cool sets and B-movie bravura, but wished for a more diverse cast, especially women in high-profile roles. Beka is now one of my favorite SF heroes, though her siblings and their respective friends and love interests run a close second. The world of this series is fascinating, as a meeting-ground of High Tech and Real Magic, with both pulled off magnificently. The secret, I think, is the matter-of-fact telling, in a plain-spoken and flexible style that's matter of fact and leaves the Gee Whiz to the reader.
Oh yes, and the authors are clearly having the time of their lives writing this. Both as a reader and a writer, I'm now officially in thrall to Doyle and McDonald and will happily follow them wherever they go.
Space pilot Beka Rosselin-Metadi is drawn into galactic intrigue after her mother, a political leader, is assassinated. For reasons that are not entirely clear, the assassins target Beka and her two brothers, none of whom have any particular political aspirations. That results in the assassins exposing themselves and inviting retaliation.
This novel is described on the cover as "Mageworlds Book One." The story left me with the impression that I had missed a previous novel. The authors keep referring back to some supposed previous actions. Many of the novel's characters seem to be only partially developed.
Overall, it is an average adventure novel. The heroine and her allies skip from planet to planet seeking the villains, leaving a trail of dead bodies behind. It is somewhat a Perils of Pauline type story as Beka escapes from a series of confrontations with her enemies.
The first Mageworlds book opens the door to one of the best series in all space fantasy. Thanks to for making these books books available available again.
OK, maybe It's been long enough since A New Hope came out to call this book "inspired by" rather than derivative of George Lucas' Star Wars epic. The author provides enough original material for The Price of the Stars to stand on its own, but it borrows many details, both large and small, from the earlier work. That said, I found this book a decent read and, scanning the blurbs for the follow-on volumes, am intrigued enough that I'll probably read the sequels. It looks indeed like a "dark day for the alliance" lies ahead.
I read this book years ago and then loaned it out. It never came back. When I saw it as a choice, I kept on it. It was as good as I remembered. It is not your typical space opera, and I am looking forward to the next one in the series.
The book itself is great. The e-book format is not misplaced punctuation, misspelled character names from one sentence to the next, no clear delineation from one scene/group of characters to the rest. I will read this in paperback anytime I can find it. Nice one, Debra. Too bad about the e-book formatting.
