After reading this, I am still not sure if this is a true story, a fiction or something in between. That says a lot about how this is written and how effective it is.
This is a story set in Vietnam and at its core it is a love story in which an American soldier falls in love with a Vietnamese nurse, but she is just using him for info. You would think that she is clearly the bad guy (girl) here, but the author gives us a well-rounded and layered characters so it is not that black and white.
I love the writing, it is very direct, with a lot of emotion. The author doesn't shy away from presenting the ugly side of war and conflicts, but also from giving us some very emotional and tender scenes. It is really a well-crafted and polished novel, I have a sense that the author thought about every word before writing it, but it still comes of as unpretentious and effortless. Excellent stuff.

Survivor Love Thy Enemy James Dennison 9781477478158 Books Reviews

Debut novelist James Dennison does an amazing thing in his brilliant, brutal story of betrayal during wartime. Rather than simply recite “war stories” about one man’s journey into the heart of darkness, Dennison deftly brings the reader along for a deployment into Vietnam in the gut-wrenching, heart-breaking, and ultimately spiritually-redemptive, “Survivor Love Thy Enemy”. This novel is written in the first person like a kind of “grunt’s eye view” of the horror of war. Dennison refuses to pull a single punch in his description of man’s inhumanity to his fellow man. This is the straight dope by an author who was there and witnessed the worst of the conflict in Vietnam and desperately wants to tell his long-held secrets. In the end, we, as readers, come away spiritually bent but not broken and all the wiser for it as this dirty world turns and turns in revolutions that seem godless or completely forsaken.

Beginning with one of the great lines of any book about war “I am a sacrificial lamb to the gods of war,” Dennison takes us from the typical shame and guilty of a Catholic upbringing and delivers us at the gates of hell, or in this case, the Mekong Delta at the time of the true turning point in the Vietnam conflict, the Tet offensive. As the author describes the terror of day to day combat, we also begin to feel the fear and sanctuary experienced by our narrator. This is not a book for the squeamish. But it’s also impossible to turn away from the cruel and evil actions perpetrated by both the Viet Cong and American forces. Dennison presents the best arguments from both sides in this conflict, the Communist forces who see America as a great imperial intruder and the U.S. soldiers who believed in their mission to stop Communism from creeping through Southeast Asia.

In passages as vivid and real as a nightmare, Dennison introduces us to Mike and his buddies in the trenches and under fire. Each one has a unique background and perspective on the fighting. And we are also introduced to a Vietnamese nurse who gains Mike’s trust only to find out information that is used against him. When she falls in love with her prey, all bets are off and an already confusing situation gets a great deal more so.

“Survivor Love Thy Enemy” is unlike any novel about Vietnam you will ever read. We see the people of Vietnam as they actually were; under siege and unable to know which side to root for, and often forced to choose contradictory sides. This is a book about the unspeakable force of evil, the unending ways we try to destroy whoever we believe to be “the enemy” and how it can be transcended by the power of human love. At the end, all of the evil that is done in the name of war – the firefights, the payback and specter of constant death all around, seems miniscule compared with the tremendous force of human emotions and the inevitable conquest of love.

This novel imbeds itself into the reader’s subconscious and stays there long after we turn the final page.
Great read
I bought the book and then didn't start to read immediately. That was a mistake. It's a great story from a different perspective. Highly recommend it!
This book is a very informative and accurate historical view of the war from both sides. I was a combat infantry soldier in 1967 and I can say this is a read well worth your time, and your learn some things you didn't know went on at the time period! Great novel!
This story is very captivating and a good read. I really like all of the historical information too. I was 20 in 1968 and followed the war very closely in the media. This book further explains many of the events that I remember from the Vietnam War.
In Survivor Love Thy Enemy I felt like I was reading the soldiers memoir versus reading a novel. This is the story of one Army soldier and the time he spent during the Vietnam War. I don’t honestly know much about the Vietnam War prior to reading this book. It was interesting to read because I know that this war changed many soldiers during that time. Also, the writer, James Dennison, does write over half of this story based on his own experiences.

This poor man falls for this nurse who is just using him to get information because she is a spy and also the girlfriend of a sadistic terrorist. I hated her at first until she started to actually fall for our hero. This was an emotional rollercoaster for me and I than James for his service knowing that part of what I read was from his experiences. I couldn’t imagine living through that.
Survivor Love Thy Enemy by James Dennison revisits a tumultuous time in world history, that of the Vietnam War. Written as a first hand account, lightly fictionalized; Dennison captures the intensity of setting off as a young recruit, with a strong Catholic background. There is plenty of emotion in this gripping tale that speaks to the horrors of war. The lead protagonist Tom heads off and soon falls in love with a Vietnamese nurse, who may or may not be an upstanding human being. With true grit, raw and powerful writing, Dennison manages to fully ensconce the reader in the story, and we witness all that is bad in war. He manages to fully explore that are always two sides to every story, whether personally or on a more historical level. This is a great read, and though difficult at times to get through and absorb, is a worthwhile reading endeavor to more fully understand the very real cost of war.
After reading this, I am still not sure if this is a true story, a fiction or something in between. That says a lot about how this is written and how effective it is.
